CHAPTER 4 –AIRLINE GROOMING
INTRODUCTION TO GROOMING
An impression a passenger carries of the airline is what you set by being the ambassador of the company. Staff must ensure that they portray a positive self-image whilst in uniform, both with their appearance and attitude.
Hospitality is our focus and first impressions are usually the lasting ones. Your appearance goes a long way in building our passengers’ confidence in the company.
Being well-groomed should not be regulation but a requirement, which each one of us must inculcate. It is our individual responsibility to wear the uniform with pride and carry it with elegance, poise and professionalism.
“Attitude” and “Appearance” go hand in hand. A positive attitude will enhance our grooming standards and will help achieve a consistent & immaculate image at all times.
One of the main reasons for having this handout is to make sure that each of you has a point of reference whenever in doubt. At airlines we strongly believe that the image of our staff must portray professionalism and exude elegance as staff in uniform is not only a front liner but also a marketer of the airline. We strongly feel that as an established domestic and international airline that aspires to be world class, it is important that our staff maintain impeccable grooming standards at all times.
To carry this out effectively, a professional and consistent image must be projected and one of the most visible channels seen by our passengers is the manner in which you adorn the uniform. This in turn reflects the consistency and high standards when dealing with passengers.
We hope you find this handout as a useful reference point and we take this opportunity to wish each one of you a successful aviation career.
PHYSICAL FITNESS AND GROOMING STANDARDS
All front line staff are required to maintain a healthy complexion and weight in proportion to height at all times. You are liable to be de-assigned from your place of work and positioned at a back office area if you suffer from severe skin related disorders / excessive weight. Hence it is advised that you consistently maintain a healthy complexion and proportionate weight at all times. Your station manager is authorized to position you at a back office under the following circumstances:
- Skin allergies on face, hands and visible arms
- Severe acne, pimples and blemishes
- Cold sores around the mouth
- Severe sty and eye infections
- Allergies: swelling caused by bites, sting or jewellery
- Black eye or facial injury
- Visible scars resulting from accidents and burn marks
- Tattoos and henna designs on any visible part of the body
- Excessive weight gain / loss resulting in not conforming to the grooming standards
GROOMING AND PERSONAL APPEARANCE
Airlines have high expectations for personal appearance and grooming. As frontline staff, you will be highly visible and the way you represent the airline is important. The customers’ impression is influenced by image. Looking professional and well groomed also gives the customer a sense of confidence and reassurance in your abilities as an airline staff and the services that you provide. First impressions are lasting and your appearance and conduct matter because any time you are wearing the airline’s uniform you are representing the company.
Each airline will have exact standards for hair, jewellery, makeup and other personal grooming requirements; these are considered part of the uniform. Most airlines consider following the grooming and attire standards to be a condition of Employment. You are expected to maintain proper hygiene standards at every moment of your work. High standards in this area require fresh breath, clean teeth, and a clean body (particularly hands and fingernails).
Your complexion should be healthy, clean and clear. Maintain (or begin) a good skincare routine with cleansers and moisturizers that work for your skin type. Regular care and moisturizing will be key in keeping your skin healthy in the cabin environment.
You will be required to maintain a clean body and fresh scent, free of unpleasant or unclean odours. Always use deodorants, perfumes and mouthwash to make sure that you smell your best at all times. Light colognes, aftershave or scented lotions are acceptable but be mindful that others may have allergies. Also, be aware that in a confined airplane cabin too much perfume or cologne can be overwhelming for others.
Although tattoos may have different cultural or religious importance in certain societies and are currently fashionable, most airlines require you to cover them completely.
What may be popular in today’s fashion world may not be at all accepted by airline grooming standards. Some candidates find it challenging to change their look to fit the standards. Although at times difficult, it is advisable to take constructive feedback about your appearance and apply it to your grooming habits. It may help you land the job.
Make-up should be natural and complementary to the skin tone. Remember that the purpose of makeup is to enhance overall appearance and not detract from it.
Healthy Lifestyle
As an airline staff, it is critical to maintain a healthy lifestyle in order to keep up with the demands of the job. Healthy habits can help you to efficiently and effectively meet the requirements of being an airline staff.
Good nutrition and exercise are key elements in being able to handle the physical and mental demands of being an airline staff. If you already have good diet and exercise habits, then you are well on your way to making minor adjustments to make those practices work for your career. If you are not already leading a healthy lifestyle, it’s time to start.
Being active is important in order to strengthen and build your muscles to avoid injury and increase flexibility. It will also help you sleep better, reduce stress and increase overall well being. Learn basic yoga poses as a form of exercise and meditation. Walking and jogging are good options for getting exercise and seeing the local sights. Find a colleague who is willing to work out or walk with you. This may also be a nice way to build relationships and encourage you to stay active.

MAKE-UP
Easy Tips:
- Make – up should be done to enhance one’s natural beauty, not to hide the flaws
- For effective makeup ll. is very important to choose the right shade of foundation
- To check if the foundation is the right colour, test it on your jawline
- The right shade of foundation is the one that disappears into the skin, not a shade lighter than the skin tone
- Concealer, if used should be l or maximum 2 shades lighter than the foundation shade, use concealer only on the area to be concealed and blend the edges well
- Always apply foundation in short, gentle, downward strokes to avoid fine facial hair from sticking out on the face
- Use a damp sponge to spread the foundation evenly and smoothly on the face and neck
- Use compact powder to set the foundation
- Use an eyeshadow in a natural beige shade on the entire eyelid before the application of the coloured eye shadows, it provides an even base for the coloured eye shadows
- Use bright and shimmery colours for small or deep-set eyes
- Use a medium tone. matte shades for protruding or bulgy eyes
- Use a matte dark brown eyeshadow to fill in any gaps in the eyebrows, it gives a more subtle and natural look than an eyebrow pencil
- Finish your eye makeup with an even sweep of mascara, as any amount of eye makeup looks incomplete without mascara
- Do not overload your lashes with Mascara as it gives a very clumped look to lashes
- Eyeliner & mascara define the eyes and make it look bigger and more expressive
- Use a thin liner for the day time and one can opt for a more dramatic lined look for the evening
- Apply blusher under the cheekbone and blend it over the cheekbone to give an illusion of higher cheekbones
- Blusher that is applied more horizontally from the cheekbone towards the ear gives the face a wider look
- To give the face a slim look apply the blusher more vertically from under the cheekbone and blend upward into the temples toward the hairline
- To allow your lipstick to last longer, apply a tiny dot of foundation and set it with powder before applying the lip colour
- Always line your lips with a lip pencil before filling it in with lipstick; this will prevent the lipstick from bleeding
- The colour of the lip liner and the lipstick should coordinate with each other
- Avoid using a dark lip liner and nude lipstick as it gives the face a very harsh and vampish appearance
- To add a slight pout to the lips, apply a dash of lip gloss only to the centre of the lips
Step by Step Procedure for Day Makeup:
- Start by Cleansing. Toning and Moisturizing the face and neck as per skin type.
- Choose the appropriate foundation colour by testing it on the jawline. The shade should disappear into the skin (jaw line because it is the meeting point of the face and neck. If the colour blends on the jawline, it will give the face & neck an even coverage). Blend the foundation using a damp sponge, so that it is easy to blend. A dry sponge can irritate the skin. If the skin is too dry, add a drop of moisturiser onto the damp sponge and then blend. This will prevent the foundation from cracking.
- Take a brush and dust some Translucent powder (Loose Powder) on the face and neck. This will help the foundation to set on the ski and help the makeup last longer.
- Take some extra powder on the brush and dab under the eyes. By doing this, in case any eye shadow falls down while doing the eye makeup it can easily be dusted off without staining the foundation.
- Now begin with the eye makeup….. (for day makeup):
Use any light frosted colour like dull gold, beige, light pink, peach, light blue. lilac. etc and spread the colour on the eyelid. Start application from the lash line and spread it up to the crease (where the eye folds when the eyes are opened). Don’t spread the colour till the eyebrows. Make sure you don’t leave any line of demarcation, (take a blank brush and go over the area where the shadow application has ended, and blend the colour towards the eyebrow with the same blank brush. Don’t take any colour on the brush)
- Moisten the cake eyeliner using an eyeliner brush to a spreadable (liquid eyeliner) consistency and make a thin line on the eyes, just enough to define the lash line.
- Use a kohl pencil on the lower lid. (Do not use the liquid liner on the lower lid as liquid liner has more lead content and can harm the eyes in the long run).
- Use mascara on the lashes to enhance the lashes. Mascara is important to give the eyes a complete look. Use the mascara wand to apply the product on the top and the bottom of the upper lashes, (it is important to apply on top of the upper lashes because the eye shadow would have fallen on the lashes while applying on the lids). (Tip: In case the mascara touches any part of the face do not make the mistake of wiping it off immediately, it will only spread more. Wait for it to dry. Then take a dry earbud and lightly rub on it – it will come off easily).
- Dust off the powder under the eyes.
- This completes the eye makeup
- Now move on to the Cheeks. The blusher needs to be applied starting from the hollow of the cheeks going upwards to the temples into the hairline.
- Use a neutral colour lip liner and outline the lips. Fill in with a coordinating colour. Use a bit of gloss if the lips are too dry. (Tip: if there is a problem with chapped lips, before starting the makeup service, apply lip balm to the lips and proceed with the makeup. Just before the lipstick application, take a tissue and gently rub the lips, the dried skin would have softened and will peel off easily leaving soft supple lips to work on.)
- Nose pins / anklets / visible religious threads
- Low ponytails / hair tucked behind ears
- Hair buns and nets
HAIRCARE
Using the right Shampoo and Conditioner is the best way to healthy hair. This can be done by first identifying your hair type. Hair responds differently to different climatic conditions. You would have noticed that your hair becomes greasy sooner during the summers and looks dry and frizzy during the winters. This is natural, the trick is to help your hair adapt to these changes. Here are some remedies for maintaining healthy hair through all seasons.
Common Hair Problems:
- Dry Hair & Scalp
- Dandruff
- Oily Hair & Scalp
- Hair Fall
- Split Ends & Hair Breakage
DRY HAIR & SCALP:
This condition is a common feature during the winters. The scalp gets dry, flaky and itchy. The hair looks dull and lifeless.
- Remedy 1: Heat ½ tsp Olive oil (Zetoon / Jaitun Ka Tel) + ½ tsp Almond oil (Badam Ka Tel)+ ¼ tsp Castor oil (Erandi Ka Tel). Apply on the scalp using a cotton swab and massage gently. Wrap a hot towel on the head and wash the hair after an hour.
- Remedy 2: 8 Strawberries mashed + 1 tbsp Mayonnaise mixed together and applied on clean, damp hair and kept covered with a shower cap for ½ hour with a hot towel wrapped over it. Wash the hair once again with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. The acid in the berries and the egg yolk and olive oil in the mayonnaise is the perfect blend to nourish and add life to dull lifeless hair.
DANDRUFF:
This is the most common problem faced by the public today. Dandruff shampoos available in the market are too harsh to be used on a daily basis and can lead to dry scalp arid hair or in some cases even hair fall or hair breakage. Some medicated shampoos like Nizoral or Selsun are better options and can be used once or twice a week only on the scalp.
- Remedy 1: A handful of fresh Neem leaves + a handful of Mint leaves (Pudine ka patte). Grind it to a fine paste. Strain the juice from the paste. Take a cotton swab soaked with the juice and apply to the scalp. Cover the head with a shower cap for ½ hour and rinse off thoroughly with lukewarm water. Shampoo and Condition as usual.
- Remedy 2: 5 ml Almond oil + 3 drops of Rosemary oil or Tea ‘Tree oil. Massage onto the scalp and let it stay for an hour before shampooing. Follow with your regular shampoo arid conditioner.
- Remedy 3: 5 ml Olive oil + juice of ½ lemon (Nimboo ka ras). Apply oh the scalp. Leave on for ½ hour and shampoo as usual.
OILY HAIR & SCALP:
This is a natural condition that occurs due to EXCESSIVE sebum (natural body oil) secretion. Use a shampoo for oily scalp. You may feel the need to shampoo your hair every day or every alternate day.
- Remedy 1: Rinse your hair with Coriander juice (Dhaniya ka ras) before a shampoo. Shampoo and condition as usual.
- Remedy 2: Give your hair a Vinegar (Sirka) + Cool water rinse at the end of a shampoo service. End it with a plain cool water rinse. This reduces the oil on the scalp and adds sheen to the hair.
- Remedy 3: Oily hair usually tends to look limp and sticky. Try a Beer rinse after the shampoo service followed by a cool water rinse. This helps add volume to your hair.
HAIR FALL:
Dandruff, Poor Circulation, Unhealthy Diet can all lead to Hair Fall. This condition can be controlled by regular scalp stimulating massage by drinking at least 8 – l0 glasses of water and eating a lot of fruits and raw vegetables (Salads). Include Vitamin E and Proteins in your diet (Dally products, eggs, pulses, dal, almonds, olives, corn, etc)
SPLIT ENDS HAIR BREAKAGE:
People generally mistake Hair Breakage for Hair Fall. Hair breakage is common in people with dry, brittle or over processed hair. Tying your hair too tight with regular rubber bands can also cause hair breakage.
- Remedy 1: Use Scrunchy or Fabric coated elastic bands instead of regular rubber bands.
- Remedy 2: Take a trim every 3 – 4 months to avoid split ends.
- Remedy 3: Avoid brushing wet hair as it is 3 times weaker and has more chances of breaking mid-length. Gently towel dry the hair first and then use a wide toothed comb to detangle. Use serum or a leave-in-conditioner to strengthen weak hair and reduce haw breakage.
SKINCARE
Who wants a Clear, Glowing Complexion? Everyone and it is possible to get that. Like our hair, skin also responds differently to different climatic conditions. We rarely have a winter here, but the pollution and humidity in the atmosphere are enough to cause damage.
SKIN -TYPES:
- Dry Skin – Lifeless, flaky and very taught
- Oily Skin – Greasy, sticky, open pores, prone to blackheads and acne
- Combination Skin – T-zone (forehead, nose and chin) oily, cheeks dry
- Sensitive Skin – Reacts to most products, red spots and rash
Mentioned below are easy remedies for various skin problems / conditions.
Remedy l: Follow a daily routine of CLEANSING + TONING + MOISTURISING. The key lies in choosing the right products as per one’s skin type. Use damp cotton during cleansing as dry cotton can be abrasive on the skin. Cleanse using firm, circular, upward strokes. This enables deep – cleansing. Ladies can use makeup remover instead of a mild cleanser, in case you use professional makeup.
Follow by toning the skin. Use an alcohol free toner. It is milder than an astringent. Astringents can be used on oily skin. Take the toner on a damp piece of cotton and dab on the face and neck.
The last step is moisturising. Use a light moisturiser or your skin might appear greasy. A moisturiser also doubles up as a base for makeup for ladies.
Remedy 2: Exfoliator for Dry Skin – l tsp Fresh Cream (Malai) + 3 coarsely crushed Almonds (Badam) + ½ tsp Honey (Shehed). Mix and apply the ingredients, massage gently using an upward circular motion on the face and neck. Rinse off with lukewarm water. Make sure the last rinse it with cool water.
Remedy 3: Face Pack for Oily, Acne Prone Skin – make a face pack by coarsely crushing Neem leaves + Tulsi leaves + Mint leaves (Pudina ke patte). MAKE-UP
